At 9:43am last Sunday morning I had just wrapped up eating breakfast with Brandi at the McDonald’s on our corner. A well known leader was going to be manning the podium at a church near our house. I haven’t visited in several years, so between bites of Southern Style Chicken Biscuit I grabbed my iPhone and Googled the church’s name to hunt for service times.
The first line in Google’s search summary read: “Woodview Church*. Space is limited and on a first come basis” [Emphasis theirs]. Really? What a first impression.

Because of the business enlightenment in the last decade or so one would think that shady marketing tactics would be dead in most industries. They should be.

I know they’re not because today I experienced my own rip-off run-in. The two offenders were American Home Mortgage and a company called TotalProtect. Their scheme was to mail small-amount checks that, if cashed, would start an ongoing $32/month subscription. Unfortunately the skanky play was not caught at the time in the Hoyt household, and we’ve been paying the bill (as a disguised add-on to our mortgage payment) since June.

A college acquaintance of mine that I hadn’t heard from in a number of years emailed me about a week ago saying that he wanted to reconnect and asked for my home address so he could send a Christmas card. Glad to hear from him I promptly responded. A couple of days ago a package arrived with his return address. But rather than a Christmas card it was material promoting a multi-level marketing system. Frankly, it went straight to the recycle bin.
